CHAPTER EIGHT
With so many eyes watching from so many different places, doing work around the house and the furniture store was becoming increasingly difficult. Jacob had driven the buggy into town, despite the wailings of the social worker who had visited the home just a few days before. There were far too many social workers wandering around Hope Crossing.
âSocial worker?â Thomas had said angrily. âIn my day, if we misbehaved, Grandpa would beat us with a mattock handle, and you know who came to help us? Jesus, if we were lucky.â
Thomas wasn't keen on being beaten with a mattock handle by any means, but he had certainly had his fill of social workers. He grumbled as he walked along the sidewalk in Hope Crossing, watching the Englischer tourists stop at various stores, and some talking to vendors in the streets. The snow had stopped, and for the most part had completely cleared. In its wake, winter had charred the sky, leaving it a dead gray color with a small patch of sunlight occasionally if you just happened to look up at the right time. It was almost a metaphor for his life, as crazy as that sounded. As he surveyed the various shops, his vision came to rest on one particular store.
That was odd. A few days ago, it had been empty, but now it appeared to house some sort of an insurance company. He moved a bit closer and glanced at the sign: Gretchen Marshall Insurance. Seriously? Gretchen Marshall, his mother, had set up an insurance company in the center of town. That told him two things. First, she had money, and secondly, she was clearly a stalker. These two things on their own could be dismissed, but together, they were a serious problem.
âHey Jacob,â he heard a familiar voice and turned to see Sherry Thomas walking toward him. Things just got stranger and stranger. First, his mother renting an office and now the former love of his life, oh, a lifetime and half ago, walked out of his past and into his present. She was taller, leaner and cuter. She also had boobs, curves, but that same smile that captured his heart back in the city. Longer brown hair, now done in the style and that green- eyed gaze that made his heart skip a beat. .
âSherry.â He couldnât believe his eyes, but there she stood. It had been so long that he almost forgot what she looked like . . . almost. Comparing her to Deborah would be like comparing apples to oranges. They were both beautiful but in very different ways.
âYep!â she said with a grin as she reached him. âI came looking for you; got your address from the office. âYou won't believe what's been going on! I got your address before I got emancipated and left the group home!â Ah, the group home office, bastion of lack of privacy, where records, phone calls and nights out could be had for the price of a bribe to the night guard.
